April 2025 Book Reviews
488 Rules For Life - Kitty Flanagan: Now, I am a big fan of Kitty Flanagan, I think she's funny on TV, and I really liked Fisk (even though some sh*tty people were on it), but the storyline was great. In regards to the book, I thought it was funny, but I found that it just went on for a bit too long, like I kinda got bored, and then it felt like it was just a bunch of complaints throughout the book. Will I read her other books? Probably, but I wish there was more intense humour in it. I laughed more at the start, but then it got a bit repetitive.
Dark Psychology Secrets - Damy Manuel: This was a super quick read and most of it I already knew about, like how applications will send you "fake" notifications to trick your brain into logging back in. Instagram does it to me all the time by sending emails, LinkedIn does it, Solitaire does it, Scrabble does it, it's just obvious what they're doing. What I do wish I did, though, is find a book like this when I was dating a narcissist, because it would have really helped me understand them a bit better and put myself first. I recommend this if you're interested in how the world manipulates us.
The Forest of Lost Souls - Dean Koontz: I haven't picked up a Dean Koontz book since I was in high school, and considering I'm gonna be 30 this year (yuck), that's a long time ago. I really enjoyed his horror books back then, and they gave me so many nightmares - like once I read one of his books about the moon, and I dreamt that the moon was going to come and m*rder me in my sleep - I forgot what the book was called though. Anyway, this one was great, it kept me hooked the whole time, and was super easy to keep track of which time period each chapter was referring to. I was really worried about the ending because of what some of the chapters were called, but I won't go into too much more detail about that. I am really glad I picked up his work again, and I will probably read some of his newer stuff now. Phantoms will forever be my favourite and I think I should read it again.
The Answer is NO (short story) - Frederick Backman: I honestly had no idea what to expect with this story, BUT I really enjoyed it, with the frying pan situation, I felt major Parks and Recreation vibes. It was a lovely story about how we all need people around us and happiness. I think everyone should read this story.
Sometimes I Lie - Alice Feeney: I feel like I read this book SOOO fast. It really grips you into finding out what happens. I liked it, but it also made me a bit confused at times, and I think that's the point, the narrator isn't meant to be reliable, so you can kinda make up your own mind about what is true and what isn't. I didn't expect to have SOOOO many twists. In my opinion, I felt like there were too many twists. It was a good story and was written well, but the ending really confused me. TW: for graphic content, including SA.
The Dictionary of Lost Words - Pip Williams: This book took me on an adventure, if you read this, you will feel every single emotion ever. It's well written, you feel like you're there with the characters, and it's great because it's based on real life events. Pip Williams really brought the characters alive, and even though Esme was a work of fiction, I feel like I knew her. This book would be great to read at the end of high school.
I'm still reading Lights Out because the book is a lot of smut, and it's very intense, and I've also just started reading Every Little Breath by Keri Beevis, which I think will be a super fast read for me.
Thanks for reading! Let me know what's on your TBR list for May in the comments!!
