Hi friends. For this edition of Freaky Friday Files, I thought we could take a look at the unsolved disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi from the Vatican City in 1983.

I hope one day this case will be solved.

The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi

On the 22nd June, 1983, 15-year-old Vatican teenager Emanuela Orlandi mysteriously disappeared on her way home from music school in Rome. This case received A LOT of international attention because there was a public appeal from Pope John Paul II for her release following the fact that an unnamed terrorist group claimed to be holding Emanuela Orlandi in exchange for the liberation of Mehmet Ali Ağca (a terrorist who tried to assassinate the Pope 2 years earlier). However, this was found to be some sort of intentional misdirection.

Obviously being linked to the Pope, the case gained significant media attention, and one would think that that would be helpful, but I think it may have been to the case's detriment (if that makes sense).

The Victim

Emanuela Orlandi was one of five siblings, and her parents were Ercole Orlandi and Maria Pezzano. She was born in 1968. I believe her father passed away in 2004. The father was an employee of the Papal Household (people who assist the pope - so quite important in the Vatican City), and the children had free rein of the Vatican Gardens to play in. Emanuela Orlandi was in her second year of high school and continued to take flute lessons during the summer. She was 15 at the time of her disappearance.

The Disappearance

Orlandi's music school was located in Piazza di Sant'Apollinare, and she got the bus there. However, she liked to get off a few stops early and walk the rest of the way. On the 22nd of June, 1983, it was an extremely hot day in the Vatican City, and Emanuela was running late for music class. She asked her brother Pietro to drive her to class, but he couldn't. He has been quoted as saying, "I've gone over it so many times, telling myself if only I had accompanied her maybe it wouldn't have happened". She officially left around 4 PM.

At the end of the class, Emanuela had called her sister Federica to explain that before class, she had been given a job offer from an Avon Products representative to hand out flyers at a fashion show. It's not super clear where the job was or how she would be compensated, but Federica said it sounds dodgy and told her not to accept and that talking to her parents is a must. Emanuela also told two other schoolmates about the job, and she was last seen at 7:30 PM at the bus stop with another girl, who has never been identified.

Later that night, Emanuela's parents started to worry, so they called the school and police, but authorities told them to "sit tight" as they believed she was just with some friends. The next day, she was officially reported missing. Honestly, I hate how authorities do stuff like this. It's a big myth that you can't report someone missing straight away - you can, but the media say that you must wait 24 hours. If you're worried, report them missing ASAP. It may just save someone's life.

Potential Theories

Mehmet Ali Ağca and international terrorism: Early on in this case, anonymous callers linked the disappearance to Mehmet Ali Ağca (the guy who had attempted to assassinate Pope John Paul II in 1981). The consensus of these calls was that Emanuela was being held to force Ağca's release. This theory is one that shaped how the public viewed/understand the case, so the case became VERY vulnerable to hoaxes. As aforementioned, this theory was a misdirect. No evidence exists tying this theory to Emanuela's disappearance.
The Banda della Magliana and Enrico De Pedis: This refers to an organised crime theory and that Emanuela's disappearance was linked to the notorious mob boss Enrico De Pedis's death (VERY powerful links to politics, violence and money, as most mob bosses have). The disappearance is "linked" to the mob boss because his bones were buried NEAR the music school that Emanuela attended. In 2012, an anonymous caller suggested that perhaps Emanuela's bones were buried alongside him. De Pedis' crypt was open, and they only found him in there. This feels like a stretch to me.
The Teutonic Cemetery: Following another anonymous phone call/tip, the Vatican opened two 19th-century tombs in the Teutonic Cemetery near St Peter's. The tip told the family to "look where the angel is pointing". The tombs they opened were meant to hold the remains of Princess Sophie von Hohenlohe and Princess Charlotte Frederica of Mecklenburg. BUT opening these two tombs was VERY strange because neither of the princesses' remains were in the tombs and neither was Emanuela. There was literally nothing in the tombs. Instead of solving the first mystery, another one was created. Another dead end.
The London Document: In 2017, a document was leaked that suggested the Vatican spent large amounts of cash keeping Emanuela in London until 1997. The Vatican called the document "fake" and "ridiculous", and an Italian chairman has said that this might have been an attempt to contaminate the case. It was likely that someone wanted people to believe that Emanuela was being held in London, not that she was actually in London.
The Vatican Dossier: In 2024, the Vatican confirmed that they had a dossier on Emanuela. Allegedly, the family had been asking about a file for years and that their lawyer claimed they had requested access to such a file as early as 2017. The lawyer said they were told there was no dossier and the case was closed (allegedly).
A child pr*dator: This one seems the most likely to me, especially with two alleged "Avon" representatives - and/or maybe a link to some sort of human trafficking or s*x ring (gross, but it fits into the theory of "gr*omers" and being lured into a false sense of security.
Serial k*ller theory: In the early 2000s, a Judge called Otello Lupacchini and a Journalist called Max Parisi conducted a study of 12+ cases of young girls who went missing or were m*rdered in Rome between 1982 and 1990. They hypothesised that some/all of the girls were victims of a serial k*ller because of the similarities in the cases and proximity to the city. They put forward a theory that Emanuela Orlandi was a victim of this particular serial k*ller and that the man responsible would lure girls in with job offers (such as selling Avon products), and then he would k*dnap them and k*ll them. However, Emanuela's body was never found, and they found most of the other bodies which were linked to this serial k*ller. I think this one is possible, especially because they never found the serial k*ller but knew they existed.
"Mario": On the 27th of June, 1983, a man calling himself Mario phoned the Orlandi family claiming that he owned a bar near the music school. Mario reported that he knew two girls and a boy who were selling Avon products - one of them called Barbara, who had confided in him about being a runaway and that she would return home for her sister's wedding. This could potentially have been Emanuela, as her older sister Natalina was going to marry in September. When the family asked what the height of the girl was, they heard a second man's voice in the background that said "no more".

I believe the case was reopened in 2023 due to pressure from the Orlandi family, but I don't think anything more came to light.

There's also a lot more speculation about this case, and I genuinely think that because of all this hype, the case wasn't able to be solved, and I don't think it ever will. I saw somewhere that people are conspiring about this case in a "Dan Brown" sort of way and that the most likely explanation is that the case is another awful case of a missing child where a pr*dator took them, and the Vatican had nothing to do with it (but hey, that's just my opinion).

I hope one day the family can get some justice. Whatever form that looks like.
