Hello everyone! Welcome back to another travel guide - we haven't done one of these in a while. As part of my 30th birthday present, Luke, Benji, and I spent a couple of days in Torquay - a little beach town at the start of the Great Ocean Road. We've been there before we had a dog, but because it's super doggo-friendly, I wanted to go back and take Benji. We didn't have the best weather, but we still made do!

Here are all our Great Ocean Road travel blogs from 2024 if you would like to see more stuff:

Accommodation (Where We Stayed + Recs)

  • We stayed in a cute little Airbnb near Taylor Park. Check it out "here". It was dog-friendly and came with some bowls and a bed for Benji Bear. He was so happy. We didn't leave him on his own there, as we took him everywhere we went, but he probably would have been happy in the courtyard if need be.

  • Wyndham Resort - I always walk past this place and think it's really fancy, but it just looks like a standard resort. If you want to get away from everything for a while, it would be pretty cool to stay in.

  • Torquay Hotel - A nice little spot for a quick getaway, and their restaurant is really good too!

  • The Sands Torquay (pet-friendly) - If you like golf, I recommend checking out this resort. It's doggo-friendly in a few ground-floor rooms, how cool.

Nature Spots (Dog-Friendly)

These are all dog-friendly spots, but make sure to check restrictions for when they are allowed off leash/times when they can't go. I believe it's from the 1st of December to the 28th of February when dogs aren't allowed on the beaches.

  • Torquay Front Beach

  • Fishermans Beach

  • Bells Beach - Dogs allowed on leash, just not when there's a surf tournament on, as it's a surfy beach. Very steep stairs to get down (it's worth it for the views).

  • Southside Beach (clothes optional beach) - Dogs allowed at the lookouts on leash. Point Impossible is the other nudist beach.

  • Point Addis Lookout - great photo spots.

  • Taylor Park - One of my favourite spots in Torquay, there are so many birds in here!

  • Moggs Creek/Fairhaven Beach - We stopped here for a sunset, and it was so pretty. Apparently, Patrick Dangerfield lives here, + everyone wanted to say hi to Benji.

Nature Spots (No Dogs Allowed)

  • Point Danger - Unfortunately, we didn't get to go to this beach this trip, but we have been here before and got to watch one of the BEST sunsets I've ever witnessed. It's a protected marine sanctuary. If I didn't have as many health issues and the weather was better, I would have gone down here by myself.

  • Rocky Point Lookout - I don't actually know if we've ever been here, but it looks very cool in the photos.

Cool Things To Do

  • Australian National Surfing Museum - This isn't really my thing, but it's great if you are a surfer and want to learn more. It costs $12 AUD to get in for an adult.

  • Drive Along the Great Ocean Road - just so cool and my favourite thing to do.

  • Memorial Arch, Lorne - A pretty cool spot to get some photos. Benji made so many people's days here.

  • Split Point Lighthouse - The lighthouse from the TV show Round the Twist. It's not clear to me where dogs are allowed around here, so we didn't visit this time.

  • Catch a wave (learn to surf) - there's so many places you can do this.

Foodie Vibes

  • The Salty Dog Cafe - they have "dogachinos," and we also bought Benji a glow-in-the-dark ball. He was very happy. The food was quite simple and delicious. Good if you want to be on a health kick, but I would have liked to see a few more sweet options on the menu. Also, some other people made me feel very awkward here, so my anxiety/PTSD started to play up, and it's embarrassing.

  • Bomboras - This place was delicious! We went here once for dinner and once for brunch; it was just classic Australian pub sorta food. Lots of options. We did ask if they had puppachinos, but we never ended up getting one, so we went back to The Salty Dog Cafe for Benji. I prefer this place for dinner - the dinner wait staff were so much more "attention to detail" oriented. I also like that they use a lot of Australian local produce.

  • Pollo Chicken Takeaway - It was raining on our 2nd night, so we didn't want to go out and went to this place. It was nice, but it was just a normal chicken takeaway shop, nothing special.

  • Pond - We didn't get to this cafe, but it looked very cute!

  • Fishos - A fancy-ish fish and chip shop by the sea.

  • Doc Hughes - Another spot we didn't get to, but they have stunning reviews, and I really hope I get to eat here one day.

  • Uncle Donut - A cute little donut shop (I love donuts, so this was always going to be an A+ stop for me).

  • Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery - We went on Cup Day, so it was quite busy, and I was very overwhelmed by all the people. We just had some snacks here around lunch time. Some staff were nice, but some didn't want to help us out. The food is nice.

  • Bells Beach Brewery - Again, another spot we didn't get to this time, but all the beers look really nice! I think we can order some online.

I'm sure there is so much more stuff to do but that's it for my Torquay Travel Guide. Hope you enjoyed this read.
