Hi friends! Happy Friday! I hope you've had a wonderful week so far. For this week's Freaky Friday Files, I thought it would be fitting to make a list of some of the haunted places in Christchurch, New Zealand considering that is where Luke and I are right now!
A list of Haunted Places in Christchurch, New Zealand
I didn't actually think Christchurch was considered a very "haunted" place, but now that I've been away for almost 3 years, looking back in like a tourist of sorts, there is a lot of places that probably are haunted.
So what are the haunted places? I've talked about Riccarton Racecourse Hotel a lot so I won't go into too much detail with that one. You can read about that in my post "13 of the MOST Haunted Hotels Around the World" but let's explore some more.
The Haunted Places in CHCH according to Reddit!
Antonio Hall - an abandoned building that used to be a Catholic seminary (now heritage listed) but according to the people who have been inside, there's a lot of weird stuff in there and many report feeling a strange sensation when driving past.
Princess Margaret Hospital - I think someone has told me this before but I'm not sure. It does make sense for hospitals to be haunted though right? I have no examples of hauntings for this one though.
Lyttleton Cemetery/Lyttleton - I think I've talked about this but allegedly there was a girl in the 19th century that was brutally m*rdered who haunts Lyttleton. In 1875, an 11 year old girl's body was dumped in the bushes. You can read more "here". People to this day still claim to see a little girl wandering around here all the time, especially late in the evening.
Waltham Railway Underpass - one Reddit said their kids described it as "m*rder alley" - just take a look at the pics and you'll see why. Looking at a photo, I get bad vibes for sure.
Riccarton House (Dean's Bush) - there are theories that the previous owner of Riccarton house - Jane Deans' ghost haunts this place, with many reporting seeing her spirit around keeping watch.
Riccarton Racecourse Hotel - you can read about the infamous unsolved m*rder that took place in this hotel "here".
The Haunted Places in CHCH according to Paranormal NZ
Ballantynes Department Store - in 1947, there was a fire that k*lled 47 people which may have been due to the fact that there were delays from the fire brigade. Many workers claim that there are very bad vibes in this store, with the basement regularly flooding and mice infestations and an all round eerie vibe, with no staff ever wanting to be in the building alone.
Pre-Quakes: United Service Hotel - this hotel no longer exists but when it did in the city, there were reports of people being shoved awake during their sleep, dark shadow figures in the hallways, and glasses flying off shelves.
Isaac Theatre Royal - Before this got rebuilt, allegedly there was a ghost called Charlie here - I'm not entirely sure if he is still there since they renovated and fixed it up, but they think that Charlie was a stagehand who fell off a stage one night or he may have un-alived himself. Reports from staff have included footsteps at night and lots of clairvoyants pointing to the spot where Charlie passed away.
Bottle Lake Forest - "People being chased by shadow figures and just sort of unseen.... people walking the dogs, and the dogs will start reacting and barking and running away, trying to pull the lead, trying to get away out of fear." TBH, this place has always given me an eerie vibe, especially following the fires that were there but it's still a cool walk - just don't go there at night in the dark!
I hope you enjoyed this post! I thought something about CHCH would be cool for this edition of Freaky Friday Files!
Stay safe!
Much love,
Ash xx
