Hi friends! Happy Friday. I hope you've had a wonderful week so far. My week has been a little all over the place tbh, with coming back from NZ and resettling into Melbourne routine. It hasn't been easy as I've been battling sunstroke from the most awful sunburn. Please, please please take sunscreen with you, especially in NZ because of that damn hole in the ozone layer.
I wasn't sure if I was going to get a Freaky Friday Files out today or not but I felt like 2 blog posts this week just wasn't enough - I feel better when I do at least 3. So don't expect amazing things from today's post, but I hope it's interesting for you! I really want to get back into the habit of getting 3 - 5 blogs out per week and then give myself some time off during the Christmas season.

Scary/Weird Stuff in Melbourne
This blog post outlines some of the scary/weird stuff that's happened in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. For my research, I started with a Reddit post and then researched some of the comments. Please enjoy!
Big Cats - there are people who believe there are giant cats near Warburton and they even have a website (TW: it's quite graphic). I also found a news article that had video footage of someone claiming to see a black panther in Ballarat. You can check that out "here". I'm not sure if I buy into this one, though.
Mr Cruel - I don't know if I've talked about this one on the blog before, but it's pretty disturbing. Mr Cruel is an unidentified ch*ld s** offend**. Mr Cruel attacked three girls in northern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne in the late 1980s and early 90s. Mr Cruel has never been identified and all 3 cases have gone cold. Mr Cruel is also the prime suspect for the m*rder of Karmein Chan - a 13-year-old Chinese girl who was k*dnapped and m*rdered in 1991. Mr Cruel was described as highly intelligent and meticulous.
Harold Holt's disappearance - the Prime Minister who went for a swim in conditions that he shouldn't have and his body has never been found. He was presumed dead in 1967. There is now a swimming centre named after him - Harold Holt Swim Centre.
Frederick Valentich's disappearance - You can check out my YT video on that one "here" and my blog post "here".
M*rder of Denise McGregor (now a cold case) - an Australian schoolgirl who was k*dnapped, r*ped, and m*rdered in 1978 from the suburb Pascoe Vale. Denise was running errands after school and was going home from her local milk bar when she was taken. Wikipedia describes her injuries as "being like those suffered by plane crash victims. A police re-enactment that screened at the time was reported to the broadcasting authorities as being excessively graphic, but the police chief said that it was toned down from what had happened to McGregor."
The Easey Street m*rders - I won't go into detail here as I've written about these before but it's pretty scary. Two women were m*rdered in their home of Collingwood in January 1977 and the case remains unsolved.
Claims of mysterious bangs (usually turning out to be meteorites).
I don't know how true this one is as there's been films made about it but I can't find a specific Wikipedia article but the Button Man - there have been a lot of people who have gone missing in the Victorian High Country but usually bodies are found. However, between 2019 and 2020, 4 people vanished within a 60km radius and left authorities baffled as to what happened to them. Some people suspected the Button Man, who, according to "this source" is "a rugged, expert bushman who earned his nickname from his habit of using deer antlers to make buttons and create large plugs for his ear piercings. He is reported to camp on the side of a remote mountain that lets him see anyone approaching. He uses snares to catch deer and hunts with expertly crafted Indigenous-style spears, which the Aborigines have used for generations." There have been many claims of people running into the Button Man but I don't think there's anything official. In 2021, remains of the 4 missing people were found and there's been a conviction of a man named Greg Lynn. According to the news outlets, nothing is mentioned about the Button Man.
The Hanging Rock Mystery - people who think there's a ghostly presence there, but it's really just because people think the novel Picnic at Hanging Rock is real (it's fiction, spoiler alert). Because the way the story is written (i.e., presented as true), people think it's something that really happened.
Some of the allegedly haunted places in Melbourne include: Princess Theatre, Hotel Windsor, Old Melbourne Gaol, Melbourne General Cemetery, QVM, Hoiser Lane, Pentridge Prison, Abbotsford Covenant, Williamstown, Point Cook Homestead, Altona Homestead, Como House, and Eynesbury Homestead.
Potential ghost caught on camera - check it out "here". I wonder if HannahTheHorrible could debunk this one?
