Hi friends! Happy Fri-YAY! Late last year, I wrote a blog article called "Freaky Friday Files: Strange Events That Have Happened in 2025 (So Far..)" which inspired me to look up strange events of 2026, so far... This week's edition of Freaky Friday Files is taking a look at all the strange, weird, wacky, and wonderful events that have caught my eye. I know it's only March, but dude, have you seen the reality we're living in right now? It makes me think of that silly IG/TikTok sound where it's "are you sick of living through major historical events" (sorry, I can't remember the rest; I bet it's going to come up on my phone now at a time where it's not needed lol).

I also want to say that I do mention people who have passed away in this blog in really awful, extreme circumstances, and that my heart goes out to their families and loved ones, may they rest in peace.

Strange Events of 2026, so far...

  • On the 3rd of January, the USA carried out a strike on Venezuela where they k*dnapped President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. I believe they're still detained?

  • On the 7th of January, an ICE agent m*rdered civilian Renée Good in Minneapolis. F*ck ICE.

  • Also in January, Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado gave Trump her Nobel Peace Prize because "he deserves it". LOL girl, what are you doing?! The Nobel Peace Prize Committee does not recognise Trump as a winner.

  • Walmart has become the first retail company to hit a market value of 1 trillion dollars. They have also adopted AI use, and I don't feel good about that. Capitalism has never been stronger /s..

  • 17th February 2026 marked the start of the Year of the Fire Horse (ending on 5th February 2027). This is a rare 60-year cycle that is marked by rapid change, intense energy, and high-speed momentum. The double fire represents freedom, bold action, and passion, and is a period of intense change. The last time this occurred was in 1966. I wonder if this is why things seem so intense right now?

  • In Tokyo, Japan, a bluefin tuna went for $3.2 million dollars at auction. The winner of the auction was "Kiyomura Corp, the operator of popular sushi chain Sushi Zanmai".

  • Mexican dr*g lord El Mencho (a major cartel boss) was k*lled by authorities. You can read how it went down "here".

  • In March, Iran confirmed the d*ath of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei following a U.S.-Israeli strike in Tehran. The stuff happening surrounding this "not-w*r" is terrifying.

  • On the 3rd of March, there was a blood moon. We didn't get to see it as it was cloudy AF here.

  • Former President Obama said on a podcast that he thinks aliens are real. It was taken out of context as it was a speed round, but he believes that, with how big the universe is, it would be possible for aliens to be real. However, he confirmed that there's no secret facility harbouring them X-Files style (but I think people took it this way).

  • Talking about American Presidents, I feel it's only right to say that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese partook in a game of speed round word association, and when given the name Grace Tame, his response was "difficult".

  • A rescue sheep in the UK, who has been dubbed "Britain's loneliest sheep," gave birth to two healthy lambs. Due to being a rescue, Fiona, the sheep, struggled to form bonds, and the farmers are hoping her new family helps with that.

  • There were reports of people injecting hyaluronic acid into their crotch area (specifically male ski jumpers) to improve performance & jump further at the Winter Olympics. No evidence has been found to support this, but damn, that would hurt, right?! Sometimes I feel a little burn when I put that stuff on my face. And how would that even work?

  • In Southland, NZ, two teenagers accidentally dropped off a bag containing w**d and cash at a charity shop. When the worried teenagers returned, police were called. LOL, of course, this happens in NZ when I don't live there anymore.

  • I feel like we gotta talk about Punch the monkey - although I don't think this one is that strange because animals end up doing stuff like this in the wild. Anyway, Punch was abandoned by his mother and other monkeys at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan and was given a stuffed toy that he became attached to, and in turn, became a viral internet sensation overnight. The plushie given to Punch was a stuffed orangutan from Ikea, and don't you know that Ikea is 1000% capitalising on this.

  • I don't really have the technical knowledge to dive deep into this one, but there seems to be a push towards the mystery of the "black box" to do with AI, where even the so-called experts are struggling to explain things. I'm of the opinion that AI is bad for the environment, and it's basically just plagiarism, but I don't get why it's not being used as accessibility for those who need it. Anyway, my point here is that people are asking questions about how AI systems make their decisions and why they're given authority without transparency. I also find it interesting that AI systems tend to be biased and are just another tool to reinforce hegemonic masculinity (ugh).

  • The number of missing persons is on the rise in Delhi, with at least 807 people reported missing in the first two weeks of January. Police believe that the spike is being hyped up in the media.

  • A person in Iowa allegedly laced some lasagna with oxycodone to cause a woman to have a miscarriage. The food was given to a whole family. The perpetrator has been charged. What a really sh*tty thing to do. No reports about whether the victim is safe have been given, but I would like to assume that they're okay.

  • There is a new trend in Japan where people are meditating in coffins (coffin-lying). Why? It's giving people a "safe" space to contemplate their mortality. Japan is big on mental health, and this new trend is intended to help people get creative with mindfulness and look after their mental health.

  • I don't have a source for this, but I remember seeing on the news that there is a rising trend in Australia where parents are naming their newborns "wombat," and we are starting to see these names appear in school.

Thank you for reading. I wonder what the rest of 2026 has in store for us all.

Stay safe, folks.
