Hi friends! Are your algorithms suddenly popping up with information about a theory known as the April Theory? Well, mine seem to be, and I was intrigued, so let's talk about it.

The April Theory
What is the April Theory?
To begin with, this theory has surfaced on TikTok, a platform where numerous theories, both conspiracy-related and otherwise, frequently arise. However, some individuals are less skeptical about this particular theory. Most of the content surrounding the April Theory mainly comes from the Northern Hemisphere, which is going into Spring right now, whereas for us down under folk, we've hit Autumn, and I want to explore the differences in that theory - does it hold weight for us folks when our days are getting shorter rather than longer?
According to one TikTok user, they say "The April theory is when you magically get out of your winter depression, the days are warmer which leads you to things that contribute to your happiness, school is about to end, you make more memories, and life finally gets good again."
However, there's been a New Zealander (yay for my Kiwi folk) suggest that Autumn is similar, and she wholeheartedly believes that the April Theory is true for us too. Beduya (2025) suggests that the April Theory is a time where the plot gets plottier and to basically be ready to yell "plot twist" at any time in one's life. Beduya (2025) went on to research the month of April, learning that April is the "real" beginning of the year - it's kinda like the new January where there are new beginnings, time for goal setting, and where your hard work pays off. She goes on to say that she's not the only one experiencing major life changes in April - she lost an old journalism job and gained a new one, her partner just got promoted, a friend got breakup clarity, and another unemployed friend finally landed their dream full-time job. She does also say it might be confirmation bias BUT she is going with it for now.
So is the April Theory just confirmation bias OR is there actually more to it?
Let's take a look at the Gregorian calendar. This is what we traditionally use today, and usually, Easter falls in April each year. We all know that this symbolises Christ's resurrection - a coming back to life. However, the astrological new year starts with Aries season, and that kicks off at the end of March. Aries is a symbol of new beginnings, creativity, courage, initiative, and energy. In addition, the Hindu/Vedic calendar in some South and Southeast Asian countries celebrates the new year in mid-April, when the sun enters the Aries constellation (usually on the 13th of April). For us down-under folk, the March equinox marks the start of Autumn - and that coincides with the start of the astrological year. For New Zealand (and some parts of Australia), daylight savings ends at 3AM every first Sunday in April - a sign of the cooler days to come with summer saying goodbye to us, with some people believing that the sun, moon, and stars are ready for all of us to start fresh. So, I think it goes both ways - but many people focus on it being the start of Spring specifically.
Levein (2023) says, "Start replacing the old with the new, whether it's releasing a friendship that doesn't serve you or toxic habits that have prevented you from being the best version of yourself. You may find yourself spending more days alone which could be a sign of healing and moving forward. As we head into this new seasonal era, we must remind ourselves that change is uncomfortable but necessary to grow. Prioritizing ourselves now is the most important thing of all, and we must let everything go that doesn't serve us. There are brighter days ahead, even if we don't know it yet, and sometimes all we need is a TikTok trend to remind us."
Many articles I have read about the April Theory talk about how April is a time when people come out of hibernation, and it's a month of renewal and restoration in both the environment and our bodies. BUT I'm gonna talk about me for a second. I don't feel like that; I feel exhausted, and that might have to do with my health, but my body has been all out of sync since daylight savings in Melbourne, and it's so dark at night. I think part of me just wants it to be colder because I've been struggling with the heat, but also, is it a time for rebirth for me? In contrast, my partner Luke seems to be really shifting his focus in his running goals and he will be starting a new role at his work very soon.
There may be other reasons that the April Theory might resonate with those of us who live in the Southern Hemisphere such as a seasonal change in general where we might start to feel a shift in ourselves and desire change, psychological impact where changing weather patterns might nudge us in the direction of introspection, and a fresh perspective - where we challenge ourselves to let go of our own biases and bad habits. So even though I'm not personally experiencing it, others might be.
So how can we use the April Theory to benefit us?
Use the month of April as a symbolic reset - maybe that's a minor mindset change or a new goal.
Use the outdoors to reset your routine - spend more time outside when it's light to get more natural light whether you're in Spring or Autumn.
Align your actions with renewal - As well as shifting your mindset, do something small to show that you want to shift your actions to align with your thoughts. For example, refreshing a space like a desk and letting go of items that no longer add value to your life.

I never heard of this theory, Thanks for sharing.
Do I believe in this theory? I don't know, probably not. I'm pretty sure it depends on the individual, though. Some people get depressed in summer or spring, so...
And I'd say you don't need a special month like April to renew yourself or shift your psyche, but maybe some people are more influenced by the weather and other factors than others, who knows?
Interesting article, thanks for sharing!
