Exploring Some of the MOST Haunted Restaurants Around the World

The Lemp Mansion & Inn, Missouri, USA

Large, illuminated two-story house at night with arched windows and ornate railing, creating a mysterious, eerie ambience.

A man named Johann Adam Lemp, in the 19th century, turned his homemade beer into a giant brewery (what we now know as the Lemp Mansion). Lemp died a millionaire, but there seemed to be some sort of misfortune lingering on in the Lemp name. 4 Lemp family members have un-alived themselves, 2 of them doing so in the mansion. And this misfortune even extends to those who marry into the family. Lillian Lemp ("Lavender Lady") also shared her misfortune, although I haven't been able to find what specifically. Many customers of both the restaurant and inn have claimed to have encountered some sort of paranormal phenomena, for example, a ghostly man peeking over bathroom stalls in the women's restroom, objects moving on their own, and blinking lights.

Heritage Hotel, NSW, Australia

Yellow building labeled "Australian Hotel" at night. People sit outside under lights. City skyline in background. Warm, lively atmosphere.

According to the blog 'typsy', the Heritage Hotel is said to be haunted by one of its previous owners Edward "Ted" Cullen (Anyone getting Twilight vibes rn?) Allegedly, Ted and his wife obtained a license for the hotel just as the Great Depression hit and the hotel suffered a great loss due to the lack of customers. Ted went to the bank to apply for an overdraft but came back unsuccessful. Once he arrived back to the hotel, he asked his wife to turn all the lights off and he went upstairs to un-alive himself. "It’s said that today, Edward haunts the halls of the Hotel where stock goes missing only to mysteriously return days later, cutlery gets re-arranged, locked doors are found wide open, guests and staff receive eerie taps on the shoulder and odd sounds are heard throughout the night." Sounds like Ted is a cheeky poltergeist.

Historic two-story white building with lit windows under a cloudy evening sky. Street in foreground. Warm, inviting ambiance.

According to The Spinoff (a more trustworthy news source in NZ), Central Hotel is said to be haunted by a man called James Carmondy. The hotel had a fire in 1901 which Carmondy passed away in, he was an elderly pensioner. The Spinoff says "His presence is felt in a very particular way as freshly made beds are later discovered to have the clear imprint of someone having slept on them, when no one has entered the room." If you want to read more about this place, I recommend checking out Paranormal New Zealand's investigation "here."

Muriel's Jackson Square, New Orleans, USA

Brick building with ornate iron balcony, plants, and sign "Muriel's." Lit warmly at dusk, sky is deep blue. Elegant, historic ambiance.

Muriel's is said to be one of the most haunted restaurants in New Orleans (and tbh, that's not shocking considering New Orleans is said to be one of the most haunted places in America and I lowkey want to go there even though America scares the sh*t out of me most of the time). Lots of locals and tourists have reported experiencing "paranormal" activity here. In 1788, there was a fire in the building that is now Muriel's Jackson Square and so the owner, Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan had to rebuild. Even though he was loved by many, Pierre was unable to stop his gambling habit and in 1814, he wagered his home. He lost his home and because the shock was so intense, he un-alived himself before he even had a chance to move out. Pierre's ghost is said to be a glimmer of sparkly light that roams the halls. Many have claimed to feel an eerie presence, hear voices, and see apparitions. The restaurant even keeps one table open for Pierre every night. I have a feeling that New Orleans is a very superstitious place.

Underground restaurant with stone walls, chandeliers, and wooden tables. Cozy atmosphere with warm lighting and rustic decor.

Firstly, I want to say what an amazing job their website designer has done, it's a beautiful design (in my opinion) and navigation was super easy. So why is this restaurant also haunted? Well, there have been reports of knocking sounds coming from the cellar, as if someone is locked inside, but there's never any one in there, footprints that have appeared on the bar's floor that could not be mopped up, whispering sounds when no one is around, and dark shadowy figures lingering around. There is a legend that says one of the previous owners of the restaurant - Jack the Jibber was h*ng in the cave shaft for giving information to the government about criminal acts. Jack was a notorious criminal, smuggling in all kinds of contraband. The fact that this is also a cave freaks me out (like how did they build this?) For context, I am terrified of caves, the movie "Sanctum" really did a number on me.

Have you ever been to a haunted restaurant before? Let me know in the comments below.

This is the first I've heard of haunted restaurants. Would I dare eat there? Of course, but maybe not in the cave. This one looks scary enough on its own. Thanks for sharing!
