Hi friends!

So, there's this trend on Instagram where we rewind our brain clocks to 2016, because apparently, it was a whole decade ago! Seriously, did someone hit the fast-forward button on life, or what? LOL! Anyway, let's dive into the time machine and see what shenanigans I was up to in 2016. It's basically me going from a dumb 20-year-old and not knowing who I was, and now I'm 30 and much more comfortable in myself. They say life comes in seasons, so let's take a look at what season I was in back then.

Here goes!

2016 Was 10 Years Ago: Where was I?

In 2016...

  • I was 20 years old (then 21 in November). Now, I'm 30 WTF?

  • I had a 21st down at Sumner Beach, but most people bailed at the last minute. Thank you to those who came.

  • Living with my mum in CHCH, NZ, after moving out for a very brief period and having so much drama.

  • I was at university, in my 2nd year, and in Semester 1, I took 5 damn papers (it was so hard, but it meant I could take 3 in Semester 2 & my first 300 Level Paper that I got my first ever A+ in). I also did a summer course.

  • I went to Gloriavale. You can check out my YouTube video about it "here". It was part of the 200-level paper that was about collective behaviour. I don't think they'd be able to do it now. It was pretty cool to get to go to a cult.

  • I got glasses for the first time, and they were SO expensive.

  • Working at Shaver Shop, then unemployed, then working at Smiggle.

  • I went to Auckland with my then partner and tried Giapo Ice Cream for the first time. I got dumped at the end of the year, LOL. We weren't meant to be together, and it worked out for both of us. Giapo ice cream is superior. It's expensive but so worth it. And Auckland is very cool.

  • Spending the summer playing Pokémon Go and not being able to throw the ball to catch a damn Pokémon.

  • Addicted to energy drinks (especially Blue V). I don't drink energy drinks very often anymore, maybe once every 6 months.

  • Decided I wanted to do my masters in Auckland and wanted to move to Auckland after uni, even though it was only 2nd year of uni. That fell through, so I moved to Melbourne after uni/lockdown.

  • I had a ruptured cyst and missed a summer paper exam - I got an aegrotat for it (now called special considerations). 2017 was when I got officially diagnosed with IBS.

  • I was not very good at doing my makeup. I had no idea what contouring or highlighter were.

  • I think it was the year I finally got my licence (but I can't remember for sure, but I did my full in 2018). I also got my first car.

  • Arguing with people about capitalism and how Trump was going to take over (makes for a good story now LOL).

  • Got Netflix for the first time.

  • I was at my skinniest and most unhealthy weight I'd ever been (I didn't have an ED; it was due to my health, but looking back, I see why people called me anorexic when I wasn't). I think I got down to about 50kg. I put weight back on eventually and had a big glow up in 2017.

  • Saw the Kaikoura seal colony for the last time (back when the colony wasn't destroyed by earthquakes).

  • I learned how to say the word "depot" - I used to think it was pronounced "de-POT" LOL.

  • Spent lots of time at the beach and started connecting with friends more than I had been.

  • Became obsessed with Galapagos Tortoises after seeing them at Auckland Zoo.

I've learned a lot since 2016, been through so much both physically and mentally, but I've found my home in Melbourne with Benji and Luke.

What were you doing in 2016? Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for reading!
