July 2025 Book Reviews
The Lost Bookshop - Evie Woods: I REALLY enjoyed this story. I loved the character development, the story about the lost bookshop, and how we got there. Even though there were a lot of horrible things that happened to each of the main characters, it had a really nice ending. However, I think they could have tied together the ending a lot better because I was left a bit confused, like who was X character, and I found myself wondering what if they added a bit of time travel in. But the themes were well explored throughout the book - oppression, power, and family. TW: DV. I give this book 8.5/10.
Never Lie - Freida McFadden: I feel like Freida McFadden books are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, as they're so bad they're good. The twist in this one, though, was a bit disappointing. I feel like it had way more potential, especially to add in a couple more characters. I'm just glad it didn't make me want to be sick like The Teacher did. Books like this are super fast to read, so I'd recommend them for holidays where you just want to laze about and read. Or if someone is trying to get into the thriller genre for the first time, it's a simple, easy read. I rate this book 6/10.
The Shower Habit - Stephanie Ewing: I think I just read this book because it was a quick read BUT it was kinda a bit null and void for me. It's about how you should shower every day and add in little habits like moisturising after a shower and doing squats after a shower. I didn't realise there was a whole series of these books, and I probably won't be reading any more. I think the advice in this book just didn't match my personality. Especially the make sure you lotion up after a shower advice, because I need to make sure I'm super dry if I put any body lotion on. Also, who wants to be doing squats with just a towel? I give this book a 4/10 because I'm sure some people do actually need this type of advice.
How To Kill Men And Get Away With It - Katy Brent: Personally, I liked the story and learning about how a woman took back her power in a very misogynistic world. However, there wasn't much character development. I wanted the main character to be different from the others, but she wasn't. She was very conceited and had an attitude like she was better than everyone else, even though she didn't actually act better than her friends. My favourite part of this book was the line that went something along the lines of "This book is for any woman who felt like she had to hold her keys between her knuckles on her way home". I'm going to rate this book a 6.5/10.
Don't Let Her Stay - Nicola Sanders: I don't know whether I like this book or not. I've read books by this author before and enjoyed them, but this one just felt awful. Like, who lets someone talk like that to them? I also felt like the first twist was enough, instead of going back and forth. It wasn't at all relatable because no one would ever put themselves in that situation—a very frustrating read. I rate this book 5/10.
So for my TBR list, I am still reading that Life Admin Hacks book, and I must admit, it's quite boring, BUT it does help me fall asleep at night; it's just taking me so much longer to read than anything else and I also just started The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami which has great reviews so I'm interested to see where that's going to go. I think having a Kindle has given me so much access to books that I probably wouldn't read normally. I do like my thrillers (as you can tell), but I've also just read so many different genres, it's really cool. Kudos to the Kindle. And don't worry, I will forever love the smell of bookshops.
